I lived in a 70 square feet, and here's my life (15YO)

To the most attentive Redditors,
I stand here before you, to blurt it all out, that simply the story you about to hear is emotionally evoking story, that no books I've ever read will be that convincing to the grains of details; that story, none other, is the story of my life; to which bittersweet details I find still conforms me for who I really am today.
So aside from the intro, I just want to say that this story is written from my recollections and the deepest of my heart. If you like it, please share it so that everyone can enjoy it. I don't usually share my life story, but because of the circumstances I'm living in, it begs me to write the story. So enjoy with a cup of tea besides!
So, my family is very tiny. It consists of just 2 people: my dad and I. When I was about 3, my mother left us. Because of that, my dad became a single father overnight. At that time, we lived in Vietnam, with a small house on the outskirts. Our house wasn't big; it only have two floors and one of which was filled with croaches on the second floor. (The floor would creaks eerily with every steps) I remember from my childhood that I always stay at home alone, because my dad was the sole breadwinner. My dad would always locked the front door, and tell me, "Son, if you have any troubles, just call the neighbors." So there was I, alone at 4 years old, not having any significant "family moments" like any other American family I see on Facebook (More on America later). My other relatives, an uncle, lived miles far away, so virtually no one I can play with except my neighbors, who doesn't have any kids.
I mildly remember that at the age of 5, my dad bought me my first PC. It was a bulbous 90's monitor with the most clanky keyboard, so clanky in fact that I might as well bought an oil can and pour over it. It was the way that I connected to the outside world and it still is today as I'm writing in a cramped 100 square feet room (more on that later). Later that year, he called one of his tech friend to help installed "English games" inside the computer; and it was that moment that I was obsessed with games all day. I was hooked on Feeding Frenzy, Iggle Pops, Dynomite, and PVZ. I would try to beat Zuma, but loses at the second-to-last round because of my tiny hands, you know. If any of you know any GameHouse employees or Popcap employees, can you give me my sincerely thanks to them for creating my childhood games? I didn't know English well, but it was the game elements that speak to me; it was so simply anyone can play.
My dad is an driver-ed teacher at a drving school. it was an on-and-off job to make money. Sometimes, he would make money, other times he would not. At 2 years old, my dad rented and started a small photocopy shop at the place nearby. At first, he was successful, because the students of nearby school would come in and photocopy their school documents, but eventually, as he explained. with "rent cost rising, and the copy machine would constantly failed", it was too much for him. For that reason, I would remember my childhood with a photocopy machine draped with a black cloak at a corner of the already-small house.
At 5 years old, something came upon me, mathematics. My dad saw my peak interest in mathematics, so every night before bed, he would pull out a board the size of a minicar and would scribble down multiplication tables equation and made me fill from 0 X 0 = to 10 x 10 =. He would also buy books from the bookstore and fill the shelf by my desk. He also enrolled me into English schools, where I absorbed the material like the sponge. even got bored with the material so I just take frequent bathroom breaks and bailed out. At 6 years old, he used all of his money to help me attend an International School, which is where the school teaches you Humanities (Writing, Reading, Math in Vietnamese) and English with a certified nonnative English teacher. This is where I stand out the most. Because of my exposure to English at a young age, I was able to skip English class for 1st grader to English 6, English for 6th graders, while learning Humanities at 1st grade, which means I often make the transition back and forth.
All is kind-of going well for me until something happen that impact me the most. My mother, who lives near there, still frequently visits me whenever my dad left for work. She lives with her gambling friends day-by-day in a tiny convienience store. Then, one afternoon on a Saturday, as my dad was at home, my mother showed up. She had thought that my father has gone for work (One of her close friends live kitty-cross from our house). My dad demanded that she paid the money she stole from my dad for gambling years ago. She made up excuses; one arguments led to another. My dad closes the front glass door, and refuses to talk to her further. My mother, enraged, grabbed the metal chair in front of my neighbor's front porch and threw it towards the glass door. It shattered into millions of shards. My dad's instinct kicked in immediately, pushing me back away. He quickly grabbed his motorcycles and went to the police station, and told me not to sweep the shards away. (I went to grab a broom and a dustpan) My mother left the scene.
When I was in second grade, we received a second letter for an interview to the United States. My aunt from my grandmother's side (lives in America and still is) is sponsoring us. Before that, my first interview with my dad in 2009, became a flop. Because of the divorce and my birth certificate printing the wrong birthplace (It prints my mother's birthplace), the USCIS (Immigration dept.) got suspicious and denied the application. (They think it is a marriage scam, where a non-American pays to a American citizen a fee to help them get to America through the marriage visa) We've appealled and in 2012, we were prepped to do the second interview. This is it, it was make it or break it. I remember walking up to a female iimmigration officer and he would ask us to raise your right hands, say a pledge etc. Then she would ask my dad first, through an interpreter, all the questions in the documents. She turned to me, and I answered her, straight in English, about how I was living with my dad and my mother was already divorced. She has no intentions of going to the United States. After for about 40 minutes, my father and I were asked to take a seat. And this is what my dad said pharaphrased: "I remember that we were waiting almost all afternoon, as the sun nearly set. We were second-to-last to get called apart from another guy sitting by. The chairs were empty, and I remember the intercom calling my name. I walked up to them and they handed me a blank visa. I cried softly inside my piteous soul as they directed you and I to get our pictures taken."
So, my dad and I arrived in United States in March of 2012. My aunt and uncle picked us up from the airport. At first, I was kind of in shock of the roads and houses, but I just chuckled and kept it to myself. I arrived at their house, and the first I saw was my grandmother that I haven't seen ever. My grandfather came downstairs, and say that "you are lucky to get here" in a mildly condescending tone. So, my aunt and uncle (let's called them A&U) gave us a room of about 130 sq. ft with a decent-sized closet. So, my dad and I set up our belongings in our closet and we quickly got settled there. A few months later, my dad bought two wooden desks from a friend. So, basically, two people lived in a room. From that point on, I never really have my own privacy space. I became mature enough when I was 7 and onwards. Because my dad knows limited English, he would often turn to me for English documents and for daily activities like buying things at Safeway etc. I would talk with people in English, paused, and translated that back to my dad, then with his quick, almost scream-like tone answers, translated that back to the speaker. Basically, I was his free translator. (Beat that Google Translate) To be honest, this made me shameful of myself in front of friends. I was thinking to myself that my friend saw how my English skills was phenomenal, and then to see my dad speaking non-English to him. That is a lot of guilt to carry for me at that time. Conflicts of my identity began to pop up. I saw how my uncle would often drove his kids to go out and play in the beaches, while often I have to stay back and do homeworks, help out the houses (my aunt commanded me to), and "be with my dad". I witness the lack of "Family material" in myself. It was just my dad and I, only on the journey of grim loneliness. I wish I have someone to turn to for my misery and confusion, but turning to my dad would often end it a "Suck it up" attitude. I was the lone rider of my journey. My dad found a job at a casino called Riverside as a cook. He would often work at night from 10pm to 5am. It was that job that he got his first traffic ticket, and I have to dispute with through phone. He often said it was the most grueling job, but also the most rewarding in terms of food discounts and tips.
After 3 years, A&U sold their first house to buy a second house in a nearby neighborhood, because that neighborhood associates with a different (richer) school district. They did that for their kids, so my dad and I moved with them there. And obviously, my A&U and their kids get the master bedroom, grandfather and grandmother gets decent-sized rooms, we were to get the smallest room in the house. The new room was about the same as the old one. So, we quickly moved our desks in by ourselves. I was about 10 and a few months. I remembered in that closet we would stashed Halloween candies inside a plastic bag labeled Free Tax-Duty. (Bag from my Aunt's Canadian trip found in her sink) and small 3-file cabinets to store knick knacks and paddy whacks. There is a reason why though, and that is my aunt. If there was one word to describe my Aunt, it would be: authoritative. She would be nit-picky about that little speck on the glass that I need to wipe until it's gone by using paper and Chlorex. She would say the floor is so dirty, and literally I could not see a speck of dirt anyway. She would always She wanted things to do her own way. And whenever there was those episodes, my grandmother and grandfather would side with her and berate me, calling me illiterate and blaming my dad for not teaching me those things. Basically, my A&U, grandfather & mother, and their two kids began to form their factions against my dad and I. There was always the threat of "The Boot" looming above our head if we didn't listen. And you think the argument will be over the next day, no you are mistaken. They will drill your mistakes in your brain; constantly bringing up the old mistakes after I make another "mistakes". They would drill the "Bless" propaganda into my brain: "You should be blessed you're living in my home." or "You should be blessed you're not one of those Homeless." I'm sorry, I just want a normal childhood, I didn't choose the path to get berated or get told what to do in a condescending tone. Why are you blaming my dad when you understand that my dad has been the the breadwinner for me, so obvious he doesn't have time to teach me life skills? My dad, feeling offended, would refuse to eat her cooked food and instead eat the stashed candies for "dinner". And even if he has the audacity to go downstairs and eat her food, then she would bring up her 'Bless" card and start drilling it down into our brains. Often times, I want to go to another friends' house after school, but my aunt, with her conservative brain, flickers the greatest lines of Excuses 101: You going to have bad influences from your friends, When I was young, I didn't get to hang out with my friends like you did etc. That plus the shame I have burdened me throughout my childhood. I was sick and tired of living under her roof, following her silly excuses. I just want to be normal and enjoy my life to the fullest. When someone ask where I live and can they come over, I would just duck the questions or try to change the subject. One arguments led to another and finally in 7th grade, we decided that we have enough, and leave with our stuff.
At this time, my father was done with his job at the casino. He switched over to work as a caregiver for the elderly. His client mainly speaks Vietnamese, so when we move, we actually move into one of the client's room that is available. The first client was a 75-years-old man who lives in a mobile home. He proclaims himself as a "decorated" Vietnam War veteran, but I doubt his claim of being decorated. At first, I thought he was a nice man, but actually he only act nice when I was there. If I went away, he would treat my dad like trash, and one time, he grabbed all our food in the fridge and throw it out on the floor. He would screamed and commanded my dad to do his things, and condescendingly called my dad names etc. There was one story of him threatening his daughter with a knife when his daughter didn't listen to him. Police were called and he earned himself a bullet in the stomach. The room was very small, then, 75 sq ft to be exact. It was the size of a prison cell. Imagine, living in that room with your dad and a spring mattress that is provided with a musty smell and downgraded wood wall. We were forced to leave one of the desk behind and brought the other desk to put it obscurely behind the mobile home.(there is a small clearing behind his home)
Luck came with us, or well that's what I feel at that time to get away from the old man (I really just want to called him boomer). My dad also find out another male client that is 75-years-old that lived with his wife (75 YO). So, my dad cuts ties with the current boomer and ended his care for him. My dad asked the wife of the new client if we can have a room to rent and stay, and in return my dad will take care of the husband (let's called New Client: NC) NC's wife agrees, but as we were about to move in, the public housing authority here asks for a relocation to a nearby unit which offer more accomodations for the elderly. So, naturally NC's family agrees and they move to the new place and offers us a room for us to stay, which is the room I am staying in today and currently typing this post. That second room was supposed to be for NC and his wife separately, but they want my dad to stay overnight and take care of NC , so my dad and I lived in that room. Many changes occur, first we slept on a convertible sofa offered by NC's family. But that sofa would filled 3/4 of a room, then we decided to sell it to someone on Craigslist and decided to buy a bunk bed. The bunk bed filled nearly 1/2 of the room, along with a minifridge, a working black desk, and a $100 piano stowed away in the closet. In other words, the walking and breathing space is limited to about 6-7 paces of walking. It is where I live today and it is quite frustating when you want to do poster project or some Arduino projects but space is limited. I don't go outside my room often because that's NC's living space, well actually NC's dead since 2017, so Nc's wife's "living space". In fact, I got into a near-fight with the caregiver of NC's wife. She would always observe our living activities when she performs her caregiving tasks to NC's wife. So, she would always criticize our activities behind our back to NC's wife and yet again, playing the "Bless" card. That day (Dec 2019), I was in my room, when she came over, she was seeking for my dad to complain about how he is "affecting" NC's wife with his home activities (like what? cooking, taking a shower), and he should be blessed that NC's wife allow my dad and I to live here. She started pointing and berating my dad. I record the conversation as it got heated, and then when she raised her voice, all hell breaks loose. I rushed out and pushed her away to one side and said to her: "Don't you disrespect my dad like that, you imbecile child." and yes, I called her a child. Words were exchanged and the cops were called. The cops, as usual, just evacuated them out of the cacophany, and told them to go home. 'Til today, from 8 am to 12pm, I detest going outside of my 50 square foot room, because I dislike seeing the face of the beast that mock my father.(Her working hours) I don't have any friends outside of school much, so the internet is officially my friend.
Epilogue: So yes, that is my story, and I am sorry that it is long (sorry for my grammar if i oofed up somewhere), but that is my struggle. Now I know that there are people who suffers in different forms and to different degrees, but by keeping this story inside of me, I will always bury that guilt. In hopes of doing so, I hope that you, whoever is reading this, might take your life as a gift that is the culmination of some shear luck/atoms that combine to form you, and you should taken granted of the 150 square feet room that you are reading this post in or the $500,000 house that you are blessed from your parents. Thank you for your time to read, and if you can is it possible on this subreddit to refer me to a small favor?
The favor: So, I'm really interesting in mathematics/physics, and would like to work with a math mentor on a hands-on project about something interesting in mathematics/physics (E.g. Like meeting a math professor and he/she can mentor me, a mentorship etc.), so that I can gain some high school research experiences (I guess it's called like that?) If you can do so, I would gladly appreciate your help. Thank you so much for reading and please post as much questions as possible!

My Life: Struggles, Loneliness, and a Single Dad

The Green that drives us - version 2

The Green that drives us - version 2
This is my second attempt of my fan chapter, The green that drives us. I hope that the killer sounds more fun to play, and that his new ability ins't over powered. Or under powered for that matter. Hope you enjoy!

Chapter #:
The green that drives us.
Killer
The Cardsharp: James Gray
Speed: 115%
Bio: Born into a wealthy family, James learned about the power of money at an early age. He would tell the butlers in the house to do something, and they would do it. He could get the highest quality things in the world just by having money. It was amazing to him how his mother and father could be so wealthy. But he wanted more.
He realized that an efficient way to money would require a high quality education, so he put lots of his time into school. Studying and learning, he was vastly above his classmates. His grades were exceptional, much to the appeal of his father.
He started thinking of ways to get more money, and he came up with a plan. He started taking small objects from around the house and selling them on the street for a higher price. Starting with things like high-end trinkets, he started making some profit off of the thing. That wasn't enough for him, so he asked his parents to enroll him in classes for business. They happily agreed.
At 23, his bartering skills were far above his families. One day, while selling a jacket on the street, on of his customers asked him to join him in a game of poker. Asking what it was, the man told him it was a way to make money. James agreed, never having played it before. The man set it up and explained the rules to him. Setting out an old deck, he handed out his cards and started playing. At first he bad at the game, but quickly caught on. The man and him played for a solid hour, before the man told him to join in a larger game downtown.
He agreed, and followed him into a warehouse down the street. There were multiple other people there, many old and a few younger. He converted all of the money he had on hand into chips, and started playing. He was masterful with a full crowd, deceiving and manipulating the people there, and gathering quite a sum of cash. It got to the point in which everyone else was forced to stop because they lost almost all of their wealth. Everyone else left the table fuming, all except the man from before. He smiled and gave him the deck that he had, saying that he would be better of with it than him.
He returned home, now with a new plan in mind. He started spending all of his time at casinos, and became a popular character around the many local bars. Playing multiple games, he loved the rush and reward of poker, and the many forms of it. He would spend entire days going from place to place, gambling all of his worth. Eventually, the others started to win. The wealth that he had gathered was slipping farther and father from his grasp. Then, in an attempt to regain it all, he started taking loans from banks and people, and tried to gamble it back. In the end, depts and fees were everywhere, and he eventually got kicked out of his collage for it.
James realized that he couldn't keep living like this, and he needed to get he wealth back. He craved the feeling of wealth that he lost. In his withdrawal, he realized that there was only one way that he could get a large amount of money fast; His parents inheritance.
His parents were later in a very serious car crash. The car apparently rammed into a moving train, killing both of them. The police did an investigation, and found the brake pads on the car were extremely weak. That, coupled with the ice of the roads at the time, lead them to conclude that it was an accident. James was never caught.
Now with a large amount of money, he paid back the debts that he owed and still has much left over. He didn't have a job, had no working experience, but he still wanted more. So, he did the last thing and the only thing he could do. He started cheating in his games.
He was good at cheating, and was able to live a stable life for a couple of years. It wasn't the way the he wanted to make money, but it was the only way he could think of. One day, he was playing a normal game at a casino, it was going well. He almost had a straight, and all he needed was a five. Slipping the card into his hand, he played his cards, only to have the dealer rush over and slam his against the table. The dealer told him that he had removed all of the fives from the table, which meant that he had to be cheating. James was in shock as the dealer yelled for security.
It all passed threw his head in a second, his mind moving faster than he could think. He was caught, which meant that he would no longer be able to play. His last way of making money was now gone. He was ruined. All of this gathered in him as he was pinned to the table, and he got more and more furious every second.
He snapped.
Many people reported seeing a man in a suit running around, killing people with the leg of one of the tables. They said that he had bashed in dozens of people’s heads with it, and no amount of force could apparently stop him. Some say that his eyes looked like they were on fire, while others reported his eyes to show only coldness and desperation. He ran out of the building and into the woods, but none of the police could find him. That was the last anyone had seen James Grey.
Power: The Bound Deck:
-When the Killer is in front of a locker, they can use the “Tag” action to tag one of four suits to the locker. An animation would play that last about 6 seconds. The killer can tag two lockers to one suit.
-Once two lockers have been assigned to a suit, you can use the “Enter” action to get inside to locker. After 5 seconds, you will exit other the locker of the suit.
-If the killer tags another locker to a suit with two lockers already tagged, the first one will be untagged.
-If a survivor is in a locker that you are going to, you will shove them out of the locker and onto the ground, where you can then pick them up.
-All tagged lockers are shown to you when within 12 meters.
-You can also tag a gens and survivor. When you kick a gen, a screen will pop up. You can then choose between each of the four suits. The next time you hit a person, they will be tagged.
-When a gen is tagged, all people working on it will have a 25% decrease to repair speed.
-If the person of the same suit works on a tagged gen, both the gen and survivor become untagged.
-The aura of a tagged gen is shown to the tagged survivor when they are within 28 meters of it.
-When a survivor is tagged, the symbol of that suit will be shown above there status. Survivors will also get a noise notification when they are tagged.
Perks:
Unfortunate: Your attacks bring down the moral of everyone around you. Every time you hit a survivor, You gain a token. Each token decreases all survivors luck by 1%, with a 8/10/12 token max.

Survivor
The agile robber: Howard Dishmill
Bio: Howard was born into a poor family, and had little time for fun in his life. His parents made little money from there jobs, and they were careful with what little they did have. They never celebrated holidays, and the only special occasion they ever had were birthdays. On someone’s birthday, they would all go out and buy three cupcakes, but that was it.
In school, he was lacking in most classes, receiving average grades, but he did well in PE. He was fond of sports, and wanted to join the football team. He knew he could do it, and the teacher told him that he could make it as well. Deciding to ask his parents about if he should or not, he went home.
That very day, Howard’s mother came home with terrible news. She had been fired from her job, which meant that they would probably not be able to pay rent. Howard immediately dropped his dream of sports and started trying to find a job. He looked high and low, and landed a job at a local grocery store, but it was not enough. Desperate to try and make money, he started taking things from the store and selling them at pawn shops. In his eyes, it was needed to keep them alive.
Eventually, he was caught by one of the managers of the store and promptly fired. With no other choice, he started breaking into homes. He didn't like doing it, but he eventually gained a knack for stealing. He started to move to better and more expensive homes, and was able to keep a steady stream of money coming in. He was eventually able to buy his mother and fathers gifts on their birthdays.
With the rising cost of the houses, so did the security. People all over his city were reporting theft, and police were now roaming the streets looking for the culprit. He continued to rob, and tried to dodge the attempts to catch him. He eventually heard the sounds of police as he was robbing a house, and ran out into the streets. Looking for a way to escape, he sprinted into the woods. He ran and ran until he was sure that the police would not catch him.
That's when the fog rolled in.
Perks:
Nimble: You make sure to move extra quietly, for it may just save your life. Your running and falling sounds are reduced by 25%/50%/75% when in the killer’s terror radius.
Material Possessions: You are vastly proud of what little you have. When you have an item in your hands, all great skill check success zones are 20%/30%40% bigger. When you don’t have an item, all great skill check success zones will be gone.
“Look at this thing! I don’t know what it will be worth, but it’s definitely worth the time.” -Howard Dishmill
Hit and Run: You know how to quickly get out of danger without causing a commotion. After you complete a gen, you will not produce scratch marks for 12/14/16 seconds.
“If you ever find yourself in a bad situation, just keep your head down and wits high. Don’t attract any attention, and you’ll be fine.” -Samantha Dishmill

Fan Chapter: The green that drives us

Note: I have no idea what I am doing, so please keep that in mind when reading this. I also have no idea how to write a backstory so if the ones I made sound bad, that is probably why.

Chapter #:
The green that drives us.
Killer
The Cardsharp: James Gray
Speed: 110%

I realize that this game has a handful of combos that don't show up on the combo list, and consist of two buildings placed close together that trigger a 'News' popup and give each building a relatively huge boost to pricing. Sometimes it's part of a combo, sometimes it's not. And unfortunately, once triggered, it doesn't seem like you can 'refresh' that pricing boost, nor can you always tell what buildings specifically triggered the 'News Combo'.
Here's what I've uncovered so far. Please let me know if you find one not on this list, and I'll add it. I'll put the name of the News item (as posted under Menu->News) and whatever businesses are named in the news list. Sometimes they need to be existing in town, sometimes they need to be directly touching, YMMV.
Oh, and it's important to note that it doesn't seem like you can make the bonus come back (moving things back together, etc). Only the first combo that triggers the News popup gets that bonus, and if you move/delete those shops, the bonus WON'T come back or re-trigger.
It's a bit difficult swapping back and forth between the game and reddit, but that should all be correct. If you find errors, or have new "News Combos", please post below and I'll add them here.
Thanks in advance.

REVISED Tips on Epic Projects based on Experiences (from FB group)

Admin of group totally revamped original post today (Jan5th) with updated info throughout
[Note: compare "Tips on Epic Projects based on experience"]
EPIC PROJECTS
My fellow Mayors,
◼These epic Quests are designed for Mayors with a lot of coin and definitely several of the larger specialisations which earn 3 epic points!
◼Since the Mountain Resort update, which included the Epic Projects, if you click 'Services and Specialisation' you will now see that each specialisation building carries an 'Epic Points' value. It is these buildings and their points which will earn you 1, 2 or 3 points on each of the buildings. These points will build up and award you a Bronze, Silver or Gold Epic Tower: 10 for Bronze, 80 for Silver and 160 for Gold. An Epic Project runs for 24 hours and whatever level you've reached at the end of that time determines what level of Tower it is.
◼Epic Projects are notified with a gold helmet on top of one of your normal Residential Zone buildings. Click on the helmet and you will see options to: change the Project Specialisation to another type, or move it to another Residential Zone building! Changing project styles and buildings costs a few hundred coins each time. Once you click "show tasks" a task icon will appear above every specialisation building for that specialisations' Project. So, if you're doing and Education Project, a 3 point task will be above every University, a 2 point task above every College, and a 1 point task above every library. There are other 2 and 1 epic points buildings in this catagory too. As you complete each task another will refresh in its place after you complete another few tasks. It's important to note now that: Gambling Epic Projects carry a maximum of 2 Epic Points for the Luxury Casino & Luxurious Tower Casino; and there are no Epic Projects for Places of Worship or Parks.
◼It seems that many Mayors struggle to achieve Gold Epics (160 points). Mayors who have 1 & 2 point specialisations are gonna have a very stressful time hitting Gold as they will be looking to fulfill 80-160, 1 & 2 point tasks!!! This Epic Project business is a 2-Step strategy. Key up with Vu disasters first to earn 3 Epic Point Specialisations. This way your Epic Projects will only require 54, 3-point tasks to hit gold level. Following this strategy yes, means waiting, planning, key-festing but eventually it means half the work and half the cost (because these Projects kill coins). Personally I feel that Gambling Epics are suited to for Bronze or Silver. So if Mayors are currently doing Epic Projects with no more than 1 Epic Point Specialisations, anything higher than Bronze is going to kill you: time, coins & products. It will also kill anyone who helps you too!!!
◼If you only want your Epic Tower to be Bronze (10 points) or Silver (80 points), you'll need to wait until the 24 hour project time has elapsed. If however you reach Gold (160 points) you can upgrade the Epic Tower immediately. Either way, once the project is completed, another golden helmet will appear 12 hours later for you to start another Epic Project.
◼Your completed Tower(s) will give you a Part Token when you complete it, and every 24 hours after that! Those part tokens build up to make a full Speed-Up token to speed up the production times in your shops and you can check you token balance at any time by clicking on the Dept Of Epics! For a Bronze Turtle Token (x2 speed-up) you will need 3 token-parts; for a Silver Llama Token (x6 speed-up) you will need 6 token-parts; and for a Gold Cheetah Token (x12 speed-up) you will need 8 token-parts. At this time of writing it appears that the number of Gold token-parts needed increases from 8 to 9 when you have built 10 Gold Epic Towers, and increases from 9 to 10 when you have built 15 Gold towers. When you have completed 30 gold Epics, the number of part-tokens required to make 1 Gold speed-up coin increases again from 10 to 11 token-parts. The number of Bronze and Silver token-parts required does not seem to increase as you build more Bronze or Silver Epic Towers, but as Mayors complete more I may have more bad news for you. Seems only Gold Epics get punished 😐😐😐
◼These Epic Projects are indeed, 'Epic'...but so are the rewards when done properly
◼Which Buildings Can Become Epics??? The only buildings that can become Epics are the original Residential Zone buildings. Tokyo, Paris and London won't have an option to change into Epics. For Mayors who built Tokyo only cities, who now want Epic Towers, this is bad news as they will need to build Residential Zone buildings to generate the Golden Helmet to start an Epic Project
◼Update 5th Jan 2016 When you have completed 30 gold Epics, the number of part-tokens required to make 1 Gold speed-up coin increases again from 10 to 11 token-parts. 😰😰😰

Questions Answers
What is the craziest/funniest story you have about your students? Wow lots to answer! I'll start with... 2.you really need to be aware of cultural and religious differences in the classroom. It is sometimes really difficult when you realize something you assume is "general knowledge" is way outside their experience - teaching myths and legends for example: they know the story of the rainbow serpent and aboriginal dreaming, or how the gods gave fire to the Tongan man, but they might have no clue who the three little pigs are. Oh the other hand, because we have a 40% pacific islander population, they are really free and open with creativity, music and dance in particular. The most popular performance in the entire year has been the Cook Island girls doing traditional dance!
Do you take into account the multiculturalism of your class when designing your lesson plan? I decided to go into teaching for several reasons - firstly because I believe kids need someone who is passionate and wanted to help them to succeed. It didn't hurt that my mum teaches too, so I knew what I was getting into! I also was lucky and got a scholarship to cover my entire university costs if I agreed to work in a "difficulty staffing area" for 3 years minimum. I was a "targeted graduate".
How does such a diverse student population affect the learning climate? Honestly, though, I really feel that there is no such thing as a "bad" kid. Crazy, yes, but not evil. Even the worst one has some good in them. I did work experience in juvenile justice system and thought that most of these kids come from such horrific experiences, how could they get out of the pattern without people working to preventing them falling further down the same path?
What made you decide to get into teaching? As for crazy, do you mean funny, weird, confrontational, violent, insane...? Because I have a few, both from personal experience and stories from others...
That's awesome! Sounds like a very exciting place to live. I really love it. We have Tongan, Cook Islander, Samoan, P&G, phillipines, Turkish, afghanis, Sudanese, Indian, Fijian, Italian, Anglo, aboriginal, Chinese, among others, but there is ever any racial divides!
Have you ever seen the movie Fortress? Don't they have a song about the piggies? Never seen it, sorry!
Are there any Jonah Takaluas? I don't think so. Ive never heard of Jonah Takaluas.
How about one weird, one funny, and one violent? Alright!
Weird: I had a boy aged about 14 who had mental health problems. He barricaded himself into the middle of the classroom during class using chairs and stayed in there for an hour, pretending to be a cat. He also refused to take the DET funded laptop because the government could track his thoughts.
Funny- an aboriginal girl in yr 7, let's call her Teraha (not her name, hers is weirder) stole a whole bundle of white foundation makeup from drama and smeared it all over herself. Went around screeching "Look Miss! Now I'm a white fella like you!" at every class. She kept going until a boy started calling her Michael Jackson and she punched him in the face. I thought it was clever, she got a long suspension...
Where abouts? How do you manage to manage a class of 500? The whole school population is roughly 500, with a teaching staff of 53. The largest individual class I teach is 29 students, but I am also a year adviser for yr 8, which is 84 students aged about 12 to 13 years old.
Oh ok, whereabouts is your school? We are a small area so I won't give you the exact name or region, but it is roughly 8 hours inland from sydney, and is rural, not urban development.
Is it Parkes...I bet it's Parkes. I only know two things about parkes: it's where the dish is and that the poet Peter skryznecki lived there in a migrant hostel as a kid. Not parkes.
Dubbo. Not dubbo. Oh thank god, it is not dubbo.
Having just finished my HSC and the Advanced English course, I was really hoping I'd never have to see, hear or read Skrzynecki (pronounced Sheh-Nes-key just to stuff with us) ever again. Not that his work is inherently bad or anything, just that I'm so very, very tired of HSC English. I know him personally. A nice man, but very forward!
I lived in Australia for a year (I'm from Canada) and found the racism to be overt compared to Canada (we are still racist but keep it mostly hidden). Is that your experience? Also can you post some scenery photos - I miss there. I think the overt racism is cultural, we are a blunt people! I'd love to post some, but I'm using an iPad without any home pics. Anyone else got some?
Do you receive any extra pay compare to teachers in cities like Sydney? How is a teacher's salary set in Australia? Is it payed by the federal government, regional authority or the municipality? In some areas, you get paid extra or receive subsides for housing etc. unfortunately, where I am does not qualify for these! It is too bad, a friend of mine in the far west pays less than $50 rent on her house and gets an extra week off because of the temperature and geographic isolation... As for who pays me, I am in public education system, so am technically a governmental employee! I am employed by the NSW (State) Department of Education and Community Services. If I was private sector, it would be a different story. Wages are decent, and they increase over time. I started as a 4 year trained graduate (I have 2 bachelor degrees, not a BA and a diploma) and the starting salary was about $54,000. Currently, I'm sitting on about $64,000 annually.
This is the pay agreement if you'd like to look, but it is currently being renegotiated with the union. Link to www.det.nsw.edu.au
How do you feel about the divide on "my child is bad, therefore - I must parent" vs. "my child is bad, therefore - it is the teachers fault that my child misbehaves, as it's not my job to teach them morals, values and ethics" ? I straddle the line. Yes, I as a teacher must teach and model appropriate behaviour and ethics, but we cannot do it alone. We see them 6 hours out of 24. What they get outside of school makes a far longer lasting impression and while I do my best to show your child what they should be doing, home is far more effective as they model from what is shown to them as appropriate!
In the case of the drop-outs and gang members: Do you think that these kids truly wanted to learn? As in, did they really want to succeed, but just gave in to gang pressures or lack of academic success? It comes back to the difference between a learning difficulty and a learning impairment. Many kids honestly want to learn and please you, but are so anxious -as in psychologically/clinically phobic - that they will do anything, including acting out violently, to escape the situation. I have had kids in tears because they are so scared of reading a sentence they are literally crippled by it.
My girlfriend and I are moving over to Australia from Scotland in a little over a month, and she is a Home Economics teacher and will be looking for a job in that field before long. Do smaller, regional schools offer such programs? What would you say the main difficulties associated with regional living are? A good question. Yes, we teach Food Technology, Textiles, Design &Technology... Basically, if it comes under the TAS description, it gets taught. See, the junior school (aged 11-16) in the public system get taught a basic taster course of most subjects and then elect their subjects in their final senior years. Your best bet is to sign up with the Department of Education and get a casual teaching number so she can get a feel for our system before applying for a temporary block or a permanent position.
Main difficulties? Distance and isolation are the big ones. You are a long way from anywhere and it takes ages to get places. This means that access to opportunities and resources are limited to what is available locally. There is sometimes a very insular community who have trouble going outside of their town- I teach 18 year olds who have never been more than a two hour drive from home, never been on a plane or been to a capital city, who have no desire to ever do so.
Because Canberra is so nice? Canberra is lovely, but so artificial!
30 different nationalities. Why? What is in your town/city? Casino? Mines? We have a large itinerant population, lots of unskilled labour positions. This includes fruit and farming mainly. Also lots of refugees flooded into the areas for a better life, more opportunities in regional areas than in the cities.
Dingos ever eat any of your kids? Just kidding, but what creepy or dangerous insects or snakes do you have to be aware of by your school? Do termites count? Joking. No, we have redback, whitetail and funnelweb spiders on premises, personally, I'd take the redback over whitetails, ( a whitetail is tiny and it's bite causes necrosis) brown snakes, tiger snakes, red bellied black snakes... Worst thing is when someone finds a baby brown snake. They're small, fast and venomous, but brown snakes never lay just one egg, so even if you catch it there is probably 4-8 other little brown evil snakes hiding under the building somewhere...
Yikes. Beautiful country..lots of nasty things. Yeah, but they are usually more scared of you or are highly visible if you know what to look for. Whitetails are awful because they love to get into bedrooms and bedding in your sleep. If you miss the bite, it can be pretty nasty, google whitetail spider bite if you need some more reasons to avoid Australia!
How do the less privileged children that you teach deal with being upside down? Well, from our perspective, it would seem that you must struggle with being upside down. For us, upside down is rightside up!
Ah. So they deal with it quite well then. Thank you for answering my question. It was either that or invest in magnetized boots. And you are welcome.
an awesome gravity machine. but low socio-economic areas can not generally afford such machines. Sadly true. We rely on thumbtacks and staples mostly, and tie ourselves down with double sided tape if we are feeling extravagant!
Please tell me you staple the children's bodies and not the clothes. Clothes tend to get expensive. Question B! How do you deal fight of dingos trying to steal the children, as well as the 9000 other creatures there trying to kill them? Easy, packs of dingoes are easily warded off when you release the crocodiles with mouths full of deadly snakes.
Man, I does this make me want to visit your great land. Hey, ask nice and I might even regale you with tales of childhood horrors! In the meantime, www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNEeq5qGh8I if you're still keen on Australia after that, look me up!
What's the attendance rate on an average day like? Well, that depends. We have a lot of "partial attendance" where students truant a lesson or two, go down the street or hang out in the school grounds, but are technically at school. The majority of our kids have decent attendance, but the 15-16 year olds are bucking the curve- every class except year 10, I might be missing one or two, but today, my year 10 class of potentially 20+ students was actually a class of 7. (It was period one, some turned up later in the day). But every school has some problems. It becomes a major concern if a student's attendance rate drips below 85%. As a year advisor, I have to contact home and enquire about this before it gets sent on to the welfare team, but when you get someone who has been in school for roughly one week in ten altogether, then it gets passed on to the department of community services and the home-school liaison officer steps up.
Are you also sick of your students not tying up their kangaroos after arriving at school? I for one am sick of finding kangaroo shit in my staff room. Yeah, it was really frustrating, but now we keep them on the back oval until the kids have to ride them home again. Once they fight off the swarms of deadly snakes and have a friendly boxing match or two, the Roos usually settle pretty quiet until we send off our boomerangs to get the latest beer advertising. that stirs them up like a bucket of prawns on a hot day!
As a rural school do you feel your students are disadvantaged in anyway in regards to funding, resources, teachers etc? I go to a school near Penrith which is not anywhere close to rural but I felt that my school either had terrible funds management or was less well off as schools closer to the city. Also if you don't mind me asking, whats the average ATAR score of your school? This is hard to answer because my school is currently receiving special grants from the government to boost our funding. At the moment, we have two more teaching positions and an extra deputy that our number of students wouldn't usually support. When this runs out at the end of the year, we will be having some serious restructuring, losing a deputy, several members of the support/office staff (including groundskeeper) and between 2-4 teaching staff. This means the load for teachers will go up and our classes will increase in size. A big problem for us is our parents and families, being low-socioeconomic groups, cannot often afford uniforms, shoes, workbooks or other equipment, or school fees. We as a school subsidize a lot for our kids, and I personally keep a supply of books and equipment in my classroom that comes out of my own money. Many students arrive in inappropriate clothing, without a bag, food, solid shoes, books or a pen, and we have to do what we can for them. We are better off than some, but compared to those "best" Sydney schools? Not a competition.

We are better off than some, but compared to those "best" Sydney schools? Not a competition. As for our results, I honestly cannot remember the average ATAR from last year. I do know that in the NAPLAN testing, we are below state averages in literacy and comprehension, but we do more "value adding" than state average - meaning our students make more significant improvement in their result between yr 7 and yr 9 than is the state average, but they are starting at a lower point so are still not meeting the goal.
Wow thanks for the replies :) Honestly from how I perceive it, teaching deserves much more appreciation than it gets at the moment. I'm really glad your students got such a fantastic teacher like you and speaking from experience, is very hard to come by. Also, HSC english is poopy. Ooooh yeah. HSC is the delight of everyone. I say this as an English teacher, HSC English, in my humble opinion, should not be mandatory. Scaled up to reward people who take it, yes. Like the maths syllabus. But mandatory, for everyone? It just makes you hate us and it.
FINALLY A TEACHER WHO (openly) AGREES! Compulsory HSC English left me so bitter and jaded after what would otherwise have been a very enjoyable final year of high school. Three years later and I can still feel the hatred welling up inside as I read those words. It sounds like your teacher did not do the course justice. Mild disdain is expected, but welling hatred is ... Not a good sign.
One of my closest friend's parents are both rural school principals in NSW, one Primary over ~40 students, one highschool over a larger school. Out of interest, did you choose to work in the bush, or were you posted during teacher training? What was the biggest "culture-shock" moment for you when you started working out past woop-woop? Did you train in one of the capitals? I chose to be rural because I felt I could do more good here. But not a culture shock. I grew up in a tiny, semi-arid, "rural-and-isolated" dairy farming town in the riverina and went to a rural university, (wagga), which meant I had more trouble adjusting to seeing hills than to the lifestyle!
I can see how that would be awesome! But by God, you're amazing for dealing with all that stuff, every single day. Amazing. I was a teacher too, so I know you don't get told that enough. ANd here's the government, come to yank your funding. And how about some more paper work for the Institute? Does it get lonely out there? I've been West, but only on business. It does get lonely, particularly as I'm not married. Meeting new people out here is hard, especially once you weed out the ex students!
That's gotta be tough. I know convincing a fella who 1. will move out there and 2. understands your passion is a tall order, because I went through something similar while living not too far from the city. Is the job good enough to keep you there long term? I have trouble because most people don't like to try long distance relationships. My job is a permanent position which is important. This means that I can be guaranteed a job from now until I retire, even if my school numbers drop and they don't need me, the government is obliged to find me another position in the state. This is called a "forced transfer" because I am technically a government employee, not employed by my specific school.
Do your students experience racism because they live in a mostly white country? It is not as big a problem here as it is in some places where I have taught. Because we are very culturally dirvese, students are fairly tolerant of each other. They are more likely to be offensive to people of the same racial background than others! We do get some racism out in the community -one man I know refers to it as "the black school" and we have had visiting schools afraid to enter our school because of fears that they might get "bashed" by the aboriginal or islander students. When they do come in, they are usually pleasantly surprised that we don't react to newcomers with violence!
I taught out your way not all that long ago. I know you didn't say where but we both know there aren't many schools that far out with 500+ students! Nonetheless, our schools could still have been hundreds of kms apart anyway. It's a ridiculously big state. I just wanted to send this your way... Hands down, the best kids I ever taught came from that little town out west. I still keep in contact with many of them. They astound me with their growing lives and I genuinely miss them. It was tough out there, I saw things that Australians should be devastated by - kids living in 'buildings' that didn't have doors (you lift one of the walls out), sleeping in caravans with torn off roofing, travelling for an hour along dirt roads just to get to school - and yet those same kids rarely bitched and moaned like their city counterparts. I also received my best training out west - training which made me the teacher I am today. I'd like to think I'm the teacher reddit wishes it had! Or at least the one I wished I had! Enjoy your time out there - the good and the bad! How far away is the nearest movie theatre? It was 4ish hours for me. I am lucky that way, we are only a couple of hours from a regional hub, with a cinema no less! I can get to see a movie in a little under an hour drive there and another back. It is hard, I think, for people who don't live out this way to truly understand what the distance is like. How many people out there can drive for several hours without seeing any sign of human society other than the road or occasional power lines?
Fellow registered teacher here. I've never taught in Australia though aside from my teacher training. What's the best way to go about getting your foot in the door into teaching? Is it generally accepted that you need to go out west and teach in a country school? Is it possible to get into some schools in the major cities in more permanent positions? The staffing system is changing, but if you want to build experience, then going west helps. You can also work casually in a school and hope a position you are suited to opens up. Permanency is a major goal and it can take years of working temporary blocks of 6 months or a year to find a school wwhich can offer it. It's about being visible and writing applications well.
What do you think life would be like in that community, for a gay student? It is difficult. Very difficult. admittedly, it is easier on the few we have here than other places I have been, we even have a few transgender students who are fairly accepted and moderately popular. Some of this is the acceptance in some pacific islander cultures, such as Tongan. From my school, the policy seems to be if you don't broadcast, they will not judge.
It has been about 2 years since I finished my teacher training. I've been teaching English In Japan since then. I don't think that experience is going to help me too much when it comes to looking for a job when I get home. Is there one particular skill or thing in demand outside teaching experience that I could develop to help me get a job? Schools like people who bring more than their job description - if you have any specialities that could help, for example, I run a lot of extra curriculars for our school including the public speaking competitions. Think about what skills or willingness you have and how these could help the community.
With limited funds, do you believe you are still able to teach the fundamentals well enough to be considered successful? I believe we do a pretty damn good job. All evidence we collect with statewide and national testing shows we are value adding to educational standard at above average for the lower ability students and we consistently get some of the best results for seniors in the region. We struggle to extend the mid range ability students as much as other schools may, but this is a situation where good teaching practise is more important than anything else we have to work with.
I am also studying teaching (high school - English and history major) and am also Australian. I was wondering, how is it teaching in a rural area? I have some friends who found the adaption hard due to suburban life. Adjusting to rural life can be hard, I have friends who grew up in cities who find it grating, too quiet, dull and too far away from friends and family. But they tend to appreciate things I forget, like being able to walk out late at night and see the entire sky filled with stars and complete silence.
When I visited my friend 6 hours south from Sydney, the night sky was the beauty of it all... I still have a year to go thankfully, so when the time comes, ill hopefully be able to decide. Also is the pay better for rural? I've heard it is. You get the same pay no matter where you are. But the further west you go, the better you concessions are. They need teachers and are happ to make offers to get them!
Are the Polynesian boys really the best break dancers in the whole suburb? PS - "Awww, Miss, you farted!" Mainly the Polynesian, but the aboriginal and aboriginal/islander boys are pretty darn talented too!
How does your access to resources compare to that of a rural school in a place like, say Southwestern Virginia? I have no idea, the only place I have been outside of Australia is China, which is very very different to australia educationally! We have access to the net, obviously, we have a decent amount of tech such as computers and smartboards in school rooms, and thanks to the dept of education, all students in years 9-12 have a school mini laptop. But we are a big, empty country, meaning it takes hours to get anywhere. Teachers struggle to get approval for professional development because it takes at least a 3 days worth of casual coverage - a days travel up, a day at the course and a days travel back...we just can not afford that.
Ay miss, is Jonah truly the sickest break dancer in school or are there new breakers out there we need to know about? My boys are amazing. They have real talent. You watch out!
What do you listen to when you want to " jam the fuck out"? Genre, artists? I love my old school classics, rolling stones especially, but i also have Pink, Marlyin Manson, Ramstien, Elvis, jazz, broadway musicals and 90s pop in the mix. When working with kids, teenybopper stuff tends to bleed into your consciousness. I unfortunately am now fluent in teenage girl and can discuss One Direction or the like almost painlessly!
I'm gonna say Griffith or Riverina area? Sounds like it. Not Griffith. Further west.
Yes hi madam international drainage commission here; which way does the water in your toilet run? If you want me to go check my neighbours, you could end up with an insanely high phone bill that causes an international incident.
How often you get called 'fucking white cunt'? A good friend of mine is a teacher and needs it to start her day, as well as strong black coffee. I think that the best one I've ever been called is a "fucking white racist pig" by a parent. I don't think she saw any irony in calling me that.
Any moments where your work felt really fulfilling? I remember being in my first year out teaching, working with a really low ability group, studying a poetry unit. We were 3 weeks in and they were really struggling with it. One day, I was working with a girl and you could see it just click - it was as if a switch had literally been flipped in her head and she looked at me with absolute wonder in her eyes - she said "Miss! There's so much more to poetry than just words, isn't there?! "
They are rare but worth it!
Do dingos eat babies? Actually, yes. Dingoes are untrustworthy feral animals, and have been known to maul small children or attack tourists. As for the Azaria Chamberlain story, I think the baby died, but I still don't know how the "dingo" got into a tent without causing any damage or disturbance...
Does "rise up lights" still sound like "razor blades" when an Australian says it? No. Rys up lihts, versus rayzuh blahdez.
What is the gifted/talented programming like at your school (if any)? I know that multicultural schools, particularly rural ones have a very hard time developing and implementing programs for the gifted, but Australia has broken a lot of ground with that research. You said somewhere that PD is hard to come by, since you're so far away from everything, but are there resources available at your school (like a gifted resource teacher)? We run gifted and talented programs in art and music, we also have dance students participate in school spectacular, but video conference training sessions. Our drama students just finished a joint drama production with our sister school in the western suburbs, where they used video chat, fb and internet to bond and build an entirely original play based on joint experiences as Australian youth. We also run a Targeted Sports program to identify those talented at athletics and sport, who get extra training and experience. It is working really well with the junior boys.
What does your AEO do? The official description appears to have been written by a committee, can you please explain using more concrete examples? An AEO is employed at schools that have a significant number of indigenous students.Basically, they work in the school to get indigenous student the best possible educational opportunities and work within the indigenous community to promote the school and education.our AEO works with individuals who are recognised "at risk", helps create multicultural programs and resources, liaises with community members and aboriginal elders, and generally seeks out opportunities for our indigenous youth while being a visible, successful role model for the students.
Do you have Bogans? I keep seeing videos with them. They seem to be a combo of rednecks and pikers... Trust me, everywhere has bogans. They are often racist, slow thinkers and lovers of real "ocker" cultural touchstones, such as utes with thousands of aerials, spotlights and a roo bar, B&S balls and bundy rum.
Do you actually work with Torres Strait Islanders? Some yes, but the majority of indigenous students here are aboriginal.
I can't help but think of tommorrow when the war began. Have you ever read it to any students? Do any of your students resemble any of the characters? I teach that book to my kids, in year 9. they love it, but don't really resemble the characters. Twtwb is a very blue mountains, mainly white population, farming town setting. Some of the landscape rings true but the people are not much like mine!
I don't know if you're still answering, but I'll ask. I live in a low socio-economic urban area in WA, where we have MAJOR problems with Aboriginal children being actively discouraged from attempting to study and improve their lot in life by parents who would rather they live off benefits. Many either feel that they are owed by the white man, or that there is no chance so why bother.. generally a mix of the two. Is this a problem in rural areas? We don't have students being actively discouraged, but our parents often don't place much value on education, and often our kids have to work to help support the family. When you are working for 6-8 hours and not getting much sleep, school is not that important.
Are sports teams a big part of your school? Does it have a rugby/aussie rules team? Sport is life in our school. If there is a competition out there, we have a team - we even have lawn bowls team!
Is the area anything like the movie "The Snowtown Murders"? No, that was mountains and in a different state, I think.
Have you seen Wake in Fright? Why do people keep asking me that?
